If you’re looking at a map, that’s not a shoelace you’re seeing. It’s the neighborhood of Harbor Gateway, Los Angeles. The partially residential, partially industrial community is located in the southern part of the California Harbor Region. A highly ethnically diverse neighborhood, the area, originally known as the “Shoestring Strip”, has experienced some hostilities between races and a gang injunction has been enforced against Latino gangs. The oddly shaped community’s boundaries are 120th Street on the north, Vermont Avenue and Figueroa Street on the west, and running south to 182nd Street where the neighborhood verses to its western boundary at Western Avenue. The area was originally annexed by the City of Los Angeles in 1906 with the expectation of taking over nearby cities within several years and establishing a combined port and harbor making up The Port of Los Angeles.
If you’re in Harbor Gateway and looking for local things to do in SoCal, you can check out local favorites like Mulligan Family Fun Center, Charles H. Wilson Park, Battleship USS Iowa Museum, LA Waterfront, Korean Friendship Bell, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, Aquarium of the Pacific, and of course Ports O’ Call Village.
