Known by many for the 1994 earthquake that literally shook up the city, the neighborhood of Northridge is located in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, California. As with the rest of SoCal, the area on which Northridge rests was originally inhabited by the Native American Tongva people, or Gabrielino as they are often referred to locally. Following eras of Spanish and Mexican conquest before seceding to the United States in the late 1800’s, Northridge experienced a significant population book during the 1950’s. In fact, in just one year between 1950-1951, the community’s residency increased by more than 1,000 households.
Home to California State University, Northridge, the community also hosts other points of interest like Brent’s Deli, one of Los Angeles’ most famous delis, CSUN Botanic Garden, Donald E. Bianchi Planetarium at CSUN, the Northridge Fashion Center, and Studio 606 West. Even the U.S. Metric Association is based out of Northridge.
A community that is always moving forward, Northridge has shaken off its quaky past and become home to some pretty cool things to do in Los Angeles. Local favorites include the Native Spirit Lounge, Skirball Cultural Center, GlowZone, Malibu Wine Safari, Los Angeles Urban Adventures, Dearborn Park, CSUN Pond, The Museum of Failure, Castle Park, and of course SunnyDay Scoot.
