Characterized by its vast open space that boasts some of the most beautiful hiking trails and horse trails in the area, the town of Westlake Village, California is 5.5 square miles of dazzling Southern California landscape; located just nine miles inland from the Pacific Ocean in the northwestern region of the Santa Monica Mountains. The first people to make this choice real estate their home were the Chumash Indians. It was in the area where Westlake Village now sits that the Chumash established their own village called, Hipuk, more than 3,000 years ago. They lived fruitfully in the area until the winter of 1770 when the Spanish Expedition of Gaspar de Portolà arrived. By 1795, the territory had become one of the first Spanish land grants, Rancho Simi, that was given to the Pico Family. In 1850, after California was admitted into the union, the land was divided between nineteen different families. Present day Westlake Village sat at the center of two of those land grants on the Rancho El Conejo and Rancho Los Virgenes.
In 1881, Andrew Russell literally outran his competition in a landrace that won him 6,000 acres of prime cattle ranching lands for the bargain price of one $20 gold piece. The land carried the name of the Russell Ranch into the 20th century, even after it was purchased by business, politico, publisher, William Randolph Hearst. In 1943, Fred Albertson purchased the land and started the Albertson Company which filmed a number of movies on the property including Robin Hood, King Rat, Laredo, and episodes from Tarzan, Buck Rogers, Gunsmoke, and Bonanza. In 1963, Westlake Village’s history truly began when Daniel K. Ludwig’s American-Hawaiian Steamship Company purchased the then 12,000-acre ranch and commissioned the preparation of a master plan to build a new, “city in the country”. While the original tract was divided by the Los Angeles County and Ventura County lines, with a portion of the city being annexed to nearby Sherman Oaks, Ludwig’s vision for Westlake Village is still alive and well today.
