Originally known as “Lane’s Crossing”, the City of Victorville was established when Aaron G. Lane founded a way station to provide shelter and supplies for people making the journey across the desert westward towards San Bernardino. A Veteran of the Mexican-American War, Lane, who suffered malaria during the war, had moved out west to join the gold rush but realized that there was a more stable living to be made selling supplies to miners. The territory making up Victorville exchanged many hands after than until 1885 when the newly established telegraph station, named for the California Southern Railroad’s General Manager Jacob Nash Victor, began the development of what is now Old Town Victorville.
Located at the southwestern end of the Mojave Desert, the climate and terrain have made Victorville a choice filming location for some of Hollywood’s most well-known flicks like It Came From Outer Space, Grand Theft Auto, The Hills Have Eyes, The Hitcher, Lethal Weapon, From Dusk till Dawn, Face/Off, Breakdown, Contact, Play It to the Bone, Kill Bill: Volume 2, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, and Sky.
