If you’re traveling to the South Bay region of San Diego County, you’ll bump into the one and only National City, California. As the second-oldest city in the county, National City is now home to nearly 60,000 Southern California residents. However, the area has been a home to local inhabitants for much longer than that. The Diegueño tribe, also known as the Kamai, or Kumeyaay, made their home near Chollas Creek before Spanish occupation purged them from the land. Between expeditions by the Spanish and eventual Mexican-American War, the land on which National City is built exchanged hands many times. In 1868, the Kimball brothers, contractors from San Francisco, purchased the entire Rancho de la Nación, which translates from Spanish as, “Ranch of the Nation”, and began the foundation of National City as it is known today.
With a wealth of history at its back, National City continues to make history as it heads into the future.
