Moreno Valley, or “Brown Valley” as it translates from Spanish, is named for Frank E. Brown, the owner of the Bear Valley Land and Water Company from which the city acquired its most precious resource during the 1800’s. The area, however, is fluid in its history dating even farther back than that. People have been inhabiting the Moreno Valley region for more than 2,300 years. There are more than 200 archeological sites around the city, including rock art that consists of pictographs and petroglyphs. When Mexico ceded California to the United States in 1850, Moreno Valley became a popular passthrough for folks traveling from the southernmost parts of Arizona to northern California. The trail became a main route for John Butterfield’s Overland Mail Company.
Though the city was not incorporated until 1984 when it experienced its greatest growth to date, the area first began to boom in the early 1900’s with the construction of March Field as part of the World War I expansion. Today, Moreno Valley is home to more than 200,000 residents, a large portion of whom entered the area during the explosive growth that occurred in the 1980’s.
