Named for the oak-covered slopes of Monterey Hills, Monterey Park, California is a city that prides itself on its past and has faith in its future. Understanding that the city is no stranger to overcoming adversity, it is easy to understand why Monterey Park would choose to inspire hope for the future by keeping its past alive. For at least seven thousand years, the land making up Monterey Park was inhabited by the Tongva Indians, also known as the Gabrielino. With their expanses of dome-shaped, thatch-covered homes, the Tongva had learned to survive in the area, no matter the season. However, the arrival of Spanish expeditionaries brought Old World diseases that the Tongva were not tolerant to survive. Few of the regions original Native American settlers survived.
Monterey Park voted itself into cityhood in an effort to protect itself from a sewage treatment facility that neighboring cities were attempting to erect in the area. The community officially became a city on May 29, 1916, and its first order of business was to outlaw sewage plants.
By 1920, White and Spanish settlers were joined by new Asian residents who were drawn to the rich farming opportunities in the area. They began farming potatoes, flowers, and building nurseries in the Monterey Highlands. Simultaneously, the real estate market began to boom in the area when Peter N. Snyder proposed the development of Midwick View Estates, which was expected to rival both Bel Air and Beverly Hills. However, the boom pilfered out with the arrival of the Great Depression.
Down, but not out, the City of Monterey Park rebounded once again and is now home to the largest community of Chinese-Americans of any municipality in the United States. Locals lovingly refer to the city as, “The Chinese Beverly Hills”, now that it is primarily inhabited by affluent, well-educated Asian Americans.
