Lynwood is a city located in Southern California and is as charming as the story of how it got its name. Incorporated in 1921, the city was named after the wife of local, influential dairyman Charles Sessions, Mrs. Lynne Wood Sessions. In 1902 Sessions acquired a title of approximately 400 acres and established a dairy and creamery, which he named the Lynwood Dairy and Creamery. As the city was born, the name stuck.
Prior to Mr. Sessions demonstration of devotion to his wife, the land which comprises Lynwood belonged to Don Antonio Lugo who received it as a land grant from the Mexican government. In 1775 he founded the Rancho San Antonio and eventually El Mission San Antonio de Padua. Their Lugo served as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1816 to 1819. After Lugo’s death in 1860, the Rancho San Antonio was divided amongst his eight children, with the portion now known as Lynwood being deeded to his daughter, Guadalupe Lugo. The land was deeded several times thereafter until the city’s eventual incorporation occurred in 1921.
As one of the most centrally located cities in Los Angeles County, Lynwood is situated at the southern portion of the Los Angeles Basin. One of the most infamous historical structures to visit in the area are the Watts Towers. Other local favorites include BALAM, AMG Korean BBQ, El Bar de 10s, Las Olas Mariscos, Las Chavelas, The Lynwood Union Gallery, and Real de Oaxaca.
