More than 43,000 people live within the 4.17 square miles that make up the El Sereno neighborhood of Los Angeles. As one of the most densely populated, lease diverse neighborhoods in the city, El Sereno traveled a long road throughout history to get where it is today. Originally home to Native Americans who settled along the banks of a stream later, named the Arroyo Rosa de Castilla, El Sereno eventually became the site of the infamous Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in 1776. The land was later passed to Francisco “Chico” Lopez after the secularization of the missions in 1833. In 1852, Our Lady of the Angels Church priest, Anaclet Lestrade, reacquired the Rancho Rosa de Castilla on which the El Sereno now sits. In the early 1900’s during the period from about 1912 to 1929, the El Sereno neighborhood began developing due in large part to the arrival of the first inter-urban rail route built just a few years earlier.
With the arrival of the Great Depression in 1930, being physically separated from the rest of the city, the El Sereno neighborhood was hit hard. At the brink of war, El Seren’s population rose markedly as the rationing of gas and rubber caused people to move into areas along the Pacific Electric routes. El Sereno was one of the neighborhoods that experienced significant industrial growth during the war years. At the time, restrictive covenant prevented Mexican-American families living in adjacent communities from purchasing homes in El Sereno. However, the area saw an influx of Mexican-Americans moving to the area after the Supreme Court lifted restrictions in 1948. Today, El Sereno is home to a population of which more than 81% is Latino.
