If you have been keeping up with the Kardashians in the last decade then you have undoubtedly heard of Calabasas, California. But, the city has much more to offer beyond infamous residents. Long before its reality television debut, the city of Calabasas was known for its rolling hills, lush canyons, springs, and streams teeming with wildlife. The territory has been home to Indians, explorers, squatters, and bandits; all of whom make up the complete history of Calabasas.
The Chumash Indians were among the first to make their home in the fertile hills of Calabasas. The hills, springs, and streams provided a land of plenty that they could easily survive on. In the 1800’s the lands were divided. First amongst the native Indians and then later large ranches were divided into farms amongst families of settlers who struggled against poverty and drought.
At the turn of the century, Calabasas became a weekend respite from the city. It was also found to be an ideal place for filming. Scenes from such films as Tarzan, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and Stalag 17 were shot in this area, today known as Malibu Creek State Park.
