City limits, county borders, state lines, are all very interesting to consider. If you live in an area intersected by one of those lines you can find yourself confronted with often confusing considerations. It’s like that town, College Corner, that is half-way in Indiana and half-way in Ohio. One school even jokes that at a basketball game you can take a shot at 3 o’ clock in Indiana and it won’t hit the net in Ohio until an hour later. The city, Beverly Hills Post Office, finds itself in a similar situation.
When Beverly Hills was founded in 1914, its borders were set to stretch roughly a mile north of Sunset Boulevard, excepting for the additional space that was claimed to include the Trousdale Estates as well. The remaining section of land that stretches north to Mulholland Drive was anonymous acreage for decades until 1963 when it was decidedly included in the 90210 zip code. The area was given the name, Beverly Hills Post Office, because, while it is technically assigned to the 90210 zip code, it sits outside the city limits of Beverly Hills. Since the area is still served by the Beverly Hills Post Office, well, it might not be the most interesting story, but it’s how the city got its name.
Locals are pretty much used to the arrangement these days. The biggest headaches are caused when emergency response services are needed; as Demi Moore discovered in 2012 when she needed an ambulance dispatched to her home and 911 operators deliberated jurisdiction for more than two life critical minutes.
City Identity crisis aside, Beverly Hills Post Office is an awesome jumping off point for an array of adventures. Some of the best things to do in Beverly Hills Post Office include checking out historic Beverly Gardens Park, originally Beverly Park and the site of Kiddieland where Walt Disney is said to have received inspiration for Disneyland, window shop Rodeo Drive, star watch around the Golden Triangle or Rodeo Drive’s Walk of Style, visit department store row, which includes Barneys New York, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Neiman Marcus, or visit The Beverly Hills Hotel, the O’Neill House, Anderton Court, 9/11 Memorial Garden, or the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts.
