Before the 20th century, Southern California was the site of a long drawn out scene of land exchange from native inhabitants like the Tongva and Chumash, to Spanish Expeditionaries, to the Mexican Government, until California was eventually ceded to the union of the United States. After the 20th century, Ranchos, orchards, barley fields, and citrus groves alike began to give way to an onslaught of new subdivisions. The Gold Rush gave way to a rush of preeminent downtown oilmen, lawyers, insurance executives, and real estate investors, all of whom were engaging various building and development efforts throughout the now greater Los Angeles area. One such neighborhood is Berkeley Square, founded by native Arkansan, William R. Burke, who arrived in Los Angeles sometime before 1885. Burke’s was extremely successful in his L.A. dealings and in 1903 he purchased a barley field, approximately 20 acres in size, on which he planned out his original vision for Berkeley Square of twenty-four lots, spread twelve on each side of a one-hundred-and-twenty-foot road. The building of Burke’s development was completed in April of 1905 and was named for the northern California town, not the infamous London Square.
