Located in the 13th District of Los Angeles, in the fertile floodplain of the Los Angeles River, is the highly diverse neighborhood of Atwater Village. As with the majority of Southern California, the land on which Atwater Village sits was originally part of the rancho system that began with the arrival of Spanish Expeditionaries. The land was sectioned for the Rancho San Rafael until 1868 when parts of it were sold to W.C.B Richardson who renamed his portion Rancho Santa Eulalia. By 1902 the entire region had been subdivided and sold to home builders, who named the area Atwater for its literal proximity to the river. The addition of “Village” to the name occurred in 1986. The area’s close proximity to growing major cities made it a highly sought after residential neighborhood in the 1920’s, which resulted in the neighborhood having one of the highest number of structures built in the county before 1939.
Today Atwater Village is known for being a quaint neighborhood packed with hidden SoCal gems. Some of the best things to do in Atwater Village according to locals include checking out the Bigfoot Lodge, which has been serving up a themed-bar-done-right since 1999, hyperlocal Club Tee Gee, The Griffin, Happier Camper, Kaldi Coffee, Los Feliz Municipal Golf Course, MCA Mural, North Atwater Park, Red Car River Park, and Swing House Studios.
