Bound together by Florence Avenue, Normandie Avenue, Manchester Boulevard, and South Van Ness Avenue is the 1.01 square mile neighborhood known as Manchester Square. Situated in the South Los Angeles region of Los Angeles, California, Manchester Square was once home to nearly 12,000 people. With an average median age and household income, Manchester Square was an agreeable place to live that was also centrally located to some of the best things to do in and around Southern California. However, for more than a decade the neighborhood’s proximity to Los Angeles International Airport has made it the target of Los Angeles World Airports’ efforts to buy up and demolish homes in the area, making room for the ever-expanding metropolis that is LAX.
A recent article by LA Curbed states that there are just five remaining homeowners in Manchester Square. The community, once made of more than 500 homes, has slowly been whittled away and the few residents who remain describe the feeling of living in the leveled ghost town to be like living alone in a vast and empty park.
While the neighborhood of Manchester Square will soon exist only as a memory, it’s currently one of the most centrally located neighborhoods in the city; placing it smack dab at the center of the MobileWash service area.
