Hawthorne Says, “So Long”, to the Car Wash and, “Hello!”, to MobileWash
It’s the 43rd Congressional District for the State of California, the home of Northrop Corporation, Tesla Motors and SpaceX. It’s the launching pad for independent rock artists from Century Media Records and the hub of electronics manufacturers from OSI Systems. You can tell by the list that nowadays Hawthorne, California is a city that believes in building partnerships with community.
Founded in 1905 by the Hawthorne Improvement Company, led by B.L. Harding and H.D. Lombard. The City of Hawthorne received its name when it was realized that Harding’s daughter shared her birthday, July 4th – American Independence Day, with famed New England author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the decision was made to name the city after him.
Initially founded as a “whites only” settlement, Hawthorne was known in the 1930’s for being a “sundown city”; which meant that signs were posted throughout Hawthorne warning African Americans to be out of the city by sundown. Today the racial makeup of Hawthorne is substantially more diverse with African Americans making up more than 27% of the city’s population and Hispanics or Latinos more than 52%.
